Why The Sooners Will Win Bedlam

Bedlam is finally upon us.  There are many biased and outspoken fans in the state of Oklahoma trash talking each other this week and I will be no different.

So why, exactly, do I think the Sooners will win Bedlam this year?  Well, it's pretty simple actually.

From the previous 105 games played between the two teams, the Sooners have come out on top 82 times.  What's that?  No one cares what happened 100 years ago?  OK, how about the last 8 straight the Sooners have won against their in-state little brothers?  You have to go all the way back to 2002 to find the last time the Pokes were able to upset the Sooners.  That's including a very similar Cowboys squad last year that hosted the Sooners in Stillwater with the very same high octane offense yet failed to win a shootout.

So enough about the past, why will the Sooners win this year you ask?  Here are a few reasons:

Offense.  This point is pretty self explanatory and can easily be argued from either side, but I'm sure you know which side I'm on by now.  The Sooners offense is the one thing that has not floundered this season even through the two painful losses.  It is no secret that the Sooner secondary has more than a couple of holes in it, but the offensive unit has surprisingly yet to wilt despite season ending injuries to their top WR and RB.  For all his faults, Landry Jones has continued to deliver when the Sooners needed him most and he has especially stepped up in big games this season.  There is no doubt this game will be a high scoring affair.  The Sooners don't need their defense to win the game, they just need to be the last ones with the ball in their hands.  The Sooners have shown that they are able to adapt and come up with new schemes to get the ball in the end zone, which leads me to my next point…

The Belldozer.  I won't try to hide the man crush I have for Blake Bell and his Tim Tebow-esque knack for getting in the end zone.  The addition of the Belldozer formation was nothing short of pure brilliance from the Sooner coaching staff.  Everyone knew the offense continually sputtered in the red zone.  Everyone knew they had a potential stud QB waiting in the wings, but how could they possibly bench their Heisman candidate QB to resolve their red zone woes?  I won't go all statistician on you, but trust me when I say that Blake Bell's numbers speak for themselves in short yardage situations and has no question been the answer to the Sooners goal line issues of years past.  Iowa State lined up 10 men in the box.  Didn't matter.  Bell is a force to be reckoned with and finds a way to get in the end zone even when opponents know it's coming.  Once he masters the skill of passing the ball, there is no telling his limits.

This is a big game.  There is no question this is a big game, but how does that play into the Sooners favor?  The Sooners have been notorious for getting up for big games, but allowing lesser opponents to jump them while they have their eyes set on the next "big game".  Unquestionably, the Sooners have had their eyes set on OSU for some time now and probably overlooked Texas Tech and Baylor leading up to Bedlam.  The Sooners national championship dreams this season may be over, but a Big 12 title and BCS bowl are still well within their grasp and they fully intend on making sure little brother doesn't mess with those plans.  The Sooners may have overlooked previous opponents, but there is no doubt they will be up for this game and they have proven to succeed in every other big time game this year.

In the end, I fully expect a wild shootout similar to last years Bedlam madness.  While the Cowboys should rightfully be favored going into this game, I just can't see the Pokes breaking the streak this year even though it may be the best chance they've had since that fatefull night in 2002.  If there is one thing that we know to be true, it's that history repeats itself.

The Sooner Defense is Broken

Currently, the Sooner defense is ranked #62 in the nation in average yards given up at 385+ yards/game. This includes games against Missouri (532), Texas Tech (572), Texas A&M (527), and Baylor (617). Teams ahead of them in the rankings include such powerhouses as La. Tech (58), La. Monroe (30), and Kent State (22). Of course, the two best teams in the nation, Alabama and LSU are #1 and #2 in the defensive rankings. I have heard the argument that “if those teams had to play in the Big 12 with spread offenses they wouldn’t be any better.” Hmmm. Is that why Texas is #10 on the list? Apparently they play a little defense (but have no offense).

The problem is varied and I want to list a few of the possibilities here (briefly).

Complacency/Success. How do you question Stoops who has won Seven Big 12 titles and One National title? Sooner fans are you really that spoiled? I'm so tired of people saying Sooner fans are spoiled because we want more. What's wrong with wanting a defense like Bama or LSU? What is wrong with even "expecting" something better than what we have? After all, it wasn’t Sooner fans who started this year talking national title and a push for #8. It was Bob Stoops and Sooner players. We have become victims of our own success. The urgency to fix something is not there because we have already won more consistently over the past 11 years than anyone else in the Big 12. Bob has built up such a resume that he no longer can be questioned. It doesn’t seem that assistant coaches are held accountable for the repeated poor performance of their players.

Recruiting. We primarily recruit offensive players and then convert some of them to defense. Next year's recruiting class is a primary example with 10 of the 14 commits being on the offensive side of the ball. We recruit a ton of WRs and then when some of them don't pan out we make them DBs. How's that working out for us? One would think with Stoop's background in defense that he would be the first to realize that defense indeed does win championships. Maybe we need to consider offering scholarships to guys who can actually “cover” someone.

Players. This relates to the recruiting issue but one has to ask the question if these guys have been oversold or overvalued? Several of them “appear” to be legitimate talents. But several seem to be victimized repeatedly which makes one wonder about their talent or their ability to understand their assignments. Ultimately they are the ones responsible but I tend to place less blame here than some.

Coaching. Bob started off as a DB coach and uhh this seems to be the biggest weakness. Is it his fault? Sometimes our biggest strength can become our biggest weakness. Is it Martinez, the DB coach? His background is in the SEC at Georgia. His resume sounds good but who knows? Is it Brent Venables? There is no doubt about his passion but what about the defensive schemes? I have heard it suggested that we rely so much on our DBs for run support that they lose focus on their primary task, covering receivers. Is the problem partially in our front seven for not being able to stop the run without help from the secondary? Some have suggested that our schemes are just too complicated. At some point someone has to say “this just isn’t working.”

Will there be coaching changes? Doubtful. Stoops has no history of firing assistants. The only way change will happen is if Joe Castiglione or David Boren get involved. The only way that happens is if we have 2 or 3 bad seasons in a row. The program is making too much money to worry too much at this point.

What’s the answer? It seems that Sooner fans will have to just accept something less than national titles. Barring a magical season like 2000 it doesn’t seem that the Sooners are really at the level of competing for national titles.

Why? Because the defense is broke and no one wants to admit it.

The Stars Align and the Sooners Fail…Again

The image above has become a familiar image not only this season, but a reoccurring theme in recent Sooner history.  Every season the Sooners inevitably slip up against an inferior opponent midway through the season and just when we think all hope is lost…the stars align.  You know, all the other undefeated teams that the media deems unbeatable somehow lose and all the other top one loss teams manage to fall to the back of the line.  Such a scenario presented itself once again this year when USC upset Oregon and the Pokes fell to unranked Iowa State.  All the Sooners had to do was win out and they were once again the favorites to be inserted to the National Championship game.

But then the Sooners did what the Sooners always do.

They failed to show up against yet another lower tiered opponent and let the Baylor Bears put up the most yards against them of any team in the entire Sooners history.  Yes, the same Baylor Bears who had never beaten the Sooners.  Not once.  The same Baylor squad who only a few weeks ago were blown out in back to back games vs Texas A&M and OSU.  The same Baylor squad that barely squeaked by a Kansas team in overtime who haven't won a game since week 2.  That very same Baylor team lit up the Sooners secondary for 45 points including a last second heave in the back of the end-zone to erase a 14 point 4th quarter Sooner comeback and send the Sooners right back into familiar territory.

The Sooners find themselves once again out of the national title picture and left only to play spoiler now to the Cowboys BCS dreams and hope for another Fiesta bowl appearance.  But lets not get ahead of ourselves.  Does a team loaded with this much talent even deserve to be playing in a BCS game at the end of the year after falling flat twice in the past month?  As embarrassing as the loss to Texas Tech was, this loss may be even more embarrassing.  More embarrassing because a perennial bottom feeder of the Big 12 is able to get their first win ever over Oklahoma just when the BCS was ready to forgive them for their lone loss and praise them for their superb wins.  More embarrassing because Brent Venables had to have seen the holes the Red Raiders sliced through our secondary yet refused to make any adjustments.  Baylor has no business putting up 600+ yards on any team, led alone the #5 ranked team in the nation supposedly fighting for a shot in the National Championship game.

The Bears probably did the Sooners a favor in the end saving them from the possibility of having to face a far superior SEC opponent and being embarrassed on the national stage again.  Now the Sooners may be able to "salvage" the season by knocking off the Cowboys in Stillwater and winning back to back BCS games.  That would have to be considered a success, right?  I'm sure it would be for a school with less tradition, but Oklahoma football comes with high expectations and simply going 10-2 every year is just not going to please the masses.  Is that fair for Stoops and company?  Probably not, but this is Oklahoma football and they know good and well what is expected out of them.

I will be forever grateful to Stoops for the 2000 National Championship, but Sooner Nation is becoming weary if another will come during the Stoops era.  The sad reality is that our defense has let us down year after year and not been the same since Mike Stoops left for Arizona.  If only Bob would welcome his baby brother back into his arms and show Venables the door…oh if only.

Injuries Strike As The Sooners Go Into Another Bye Week

Here we are on the eve of a Sooners bye week with 3 games left on the schedule and a banged up Sooners squad that has it's work cut out for them.

It's no secret that the Sooners have lost 2 of their premier play-makers for the remainder of the season in Ryan Broyles and breakout star Dominique Whaley.  Broyles had recently set the all time Division 1 record for career receptions while Whaley burst on to the scene this year leading the Sooners in all major rushing categories and establishing himself as the clear cut starter in a once crowded Sooner backfield.  While Whaley will get a chance to return next year, this is it for Broyles and it was tough to watch him go down before the season concluded.  I do wonder if the Sooners will be able to recover from losing their starting RB and star WR with a showdown in Stillwater on the horizon.

Sophomores Roy Finch and Kenny Stills will be cast into the spotlight and be expected to carry the load where their now injured counterparts once did.  Finch was widely believed to be the starter coming into this season as he stole carries from DeMarco Murray last year (who is now setting franchise records for the Dallas Cowboys).  It was not to be though as Whaley stole the spotlight and dominated while Finch saw minimal carries early on.  With Whaley out, Finch has been thrust back into the starting position and has had flashes of greatness once again, but will he be able to carry the load like Whaley against a determined Cowboys team in December?

Meanwhile, Kenny Stills has played a nice compliment to Ryan Broyles all season long stretching the outside of the field and opening up holes in the middle for Broyles.  With Broyles no longer slotted in the middle we are going to need to see continued improvements from the one handed wonder known as Jaz Reynolds who has been developing quite nice as of late.

Still, the losses of Broyles and Whaley cannot be overstated and brings heavy concerns to this team with the daunting task of going into Bedlam back to back years and knocking off the Pokes in their own backyard.

The sad reality is that even with a win, the Sooners may not be able to jump the Crimson Tide as Bama lost in a perfect storm overtime game to LSU this past weekend and dropped only one spot down to #3 in the BCS rankings and still ahead of unbeatens Stanford and Boise State.  I would like to think that with a win over the #2 ranked Cowboys in Stillwater for the Big 12 Championship that the Sooners would leap-frog the Tide and into a national championship game with LSU, but I'm beginning to wonder if the voters have even more of a love affair with the SEC than I could have ever dreamed.  There are still games to be played and anything can happen, but the Sooners have a long road ahead of them and will need quite a few chips to fall into place if they plan on having any shot at #8 this year.

Have The Sooners Been Given A Second Chance?

Let's get one thing out of the way, the Sooners' loss to Texas Tech this year ranks up in the top 5 losses of all time in the programs storied history.  A team that was preseason ranked #1 and held a 39 game home winning streak let an un-ranked Red Raiders team come into Norman and flat out embarrass them.  It was the second straight week of flat play from the Sooners after a dominating victory at the Cotton Bowl.  The blame game can be played all day long on who is at fault for the loss, but I want to move past this.  I want to focus on the rest of the season and what the future may hold.

The Sooners went into Manhattan, Kansas this past week and showed that they still have a little something left to prove this year and will not be coasting this one out.  After the Wildcats sustained the run early on, Brent Venables adapted the defense and began stacking the box and getting to the quarterback.  Put in 3rd and long over and over, the Wildcats were in unfamiliar territory and folded their tents with no real threat of a passing attack.

So what does all of this mean?  With a few more breaks the Sooners could find themselves right back in the National Championship game.  With a dominating win over then unbeaten Kansas State, the Sooners find themselves back in good graces with the BCS and ranked the highest of all 1-loss teams (#6).  With #1 LSU set to take on #2 Alabama this weekend, one of the two is bound to drop below the Sooners and with the #3 ranked Cowboys still on the schedule all the Sooners really need is a Stanford loss.  They would obviously need to win their remaining games, but if so, the good Lord may shine down his mercies on them and forgive an unforgivable loss to the Red Raiders.  Even with an undefeated Boise State in the way, the Sooners should be able to jump them with a win over then #2 ranked OSU in Stillwater.  And I don't want to hear any arguments about an SEC rematch in the title game, that's not happening.

Now that is a lot of "ifs" left in the way and the most important one is the Bedlam showdown in Stillwater on December 3rd.  If the Sooners can't foil the high powered Cowboys, then all of the above points are moot and we will be sitting back watching the Pokes try for their first ever National Championship.  But come on, I think we all know that ain't happening.
